Derek followed the lights of Rene’s car through the night. She’d told him that she didn’t live far and that she was going to show him the house. She’d been insistent that there was to be no … funny stuff. He was sure he could change her mind, though. A little of the old charm. He smiled to himself, following as she pulled off the dual carriageway onto the off ramp.

Pain in the arse having two cars. But it was okay. It just meant that when he’d finished, he could go home and sleep in his own bed, without having to call a taxi at some ungodly hour and go back to the restaurant and then drive home from there.

They were on country roads now.

He squinted out through the window, turning left this time. The road they were on didn’t even have street lights. The brake lights flared and the car turned again. This time off the road.

He looked at the clock on the dash. They’d been driving for about fifteen minutes, but almost all of it was directly out of the city. They were in the sticks somewhere now. He thought through the turns in his head. Come out the drive turn left. Then right. That should aim him back to the main road.

He followed into the driveway that she had. Passing through a light copse of trees he saw the house down the immaculately designed driveway. One with a turning circle outside the front door. Like Downtown fucking Abby or something. He pulled up behind Rene’s car and looked at the house.

He’d scored big time. She was fucking loaded. Beautiful. She was going to let him fulfil all his fantasies at once. And he could have it all. Stop working. Become a man of leisure. Rene was getting from the car. He watched her. Her grace and subtlety. She was … perfect. “Don’t go fucking this up,” he muttered to himself.

He opened the door and flailed suddenly. He stopped himself and unbuckled his seatbelt. Got out the car. He was very aware that he’d managed to blow his James Bond persona. He smiled at her, letting the door to the car close. Didn’t bother to lock it. It wasn’t like there was a bad element in this area, now, was there? He whistled as he got closer. “Nice,” he said. “I knew you were a lady, and a lady of means, but I had no idea.” He chuckled. “Are you a highness?”

Rene blushed. He could see her doing it in the up lights that brushed the house of darkness. “No,” she said. “But you can call me madam, or mistress, if you like.” She laughed before leading him to the front door. Opened up. Into the hallway beyond. Marble floors and a grand staircase.

Derek couldn’t believe his luck. “You live here alone?” he asked. He wanted to ask if she owned it all, but thought that might be a little too close to the mark. He still had to make sure he didn’t blow it.
